Day 51: Iceland so far (EVs, no puffins, and traveling in the middle of nowhere)

Driving up the mountain (to the middle of nowhere)

It’s 8:21am on July 30, 2023 and I’m sitting in a re-furbished old elementary school called North East Guesthouse, located at Skólagata 1, 685 Bakkafjörður (located in the far North East part of Iceland).

The night before, we were charging our Opel Corsa (electric car) at a Tesla Supercharging station in Egilsstaðir which was about a 2-hour drive from this place.

Our goal was to stay at this hotel so we can wake up early to see the puffins.

But uuuuhhhh, I don’t think this is THE place to see puffins.

Lol.

Actually, when I look up “things to do” on Google maps, nothing shows up for miles away. The thousands of puffins are actually located in Borgarfjörður eystri which is now about a 3-hour drive from us.

It was originally a one hour drive at Egilsstaðir where we were charging our car but now we are going to loop back to that area and then head to our next destination at Höfn, which is another 4 hour drive away from the puffins place.

Soooo, today’s journey will consist of a good 7 hours of driving.

PLUS we have to charge our car in between these drives so potentially another 2 hours of charging in between.

To sum it up, today is going to be another LONG DAY.

It’s actually quite hilarious how this trip has been a rollercoaster ride.

Because we got an electric car, we are saving a lot on petrol/gas.

BUT it’s definitely been an inconvenience not knowing how many kilometres we have left in our car (the kilometres fluctuate a lot depending on the terrain, elevation, how fast we are going, how eco-friendly we are driving, etc.).

The trip has been planned around which charging station we need to visit and stop at next and having our fingers crossed that the charging station isn’t full so there are slots available for us to charge our car.

We are using an app called ON and constantly opening the app to see if anyone else is using the chargers we want.

Okay, time to put this blog on hold as my travel buddies are waking up so it’s time for me to get ready, eat breakfast and head out as well!

Peace out!

xoxo, knd.
